Flash Needed

In the recent years past finding a Hip Hop album that had some kind of substance was a task.  You had to literally search all over to find something that wasn’t by someone with “Young” or “Lil” in their name.  What I am saying was summed up best by Dead Prez in “Hip Hop”:

Talkin’ ‘bout how much money they got

Nigga all y’all records sound the same

I’m sick of that fake thug, R&B, rap scenario all day on the radio

Same scenes in the video, monotonous material

Y’all don’t hear me though

Being hard-pressed to find an album to listen to (one where you didn’t skip 10 out of the 15 songs) had become the norm.  So in order to compensate for this lack of quality music you had to adopt “guilty pleasures.” (You know those songs or artists that you like on the low, but don’t tell your friends about because they will question your integrity and judgment from then on.  But inevitably they find out, when you get caught dancing to it in a club, or turning up the volume when it’s played on the radio and you fell sort of ashamed.)

These norms came to pass this year…well, kinda.  We’re still bombarded with the “Young this” and “Lil’

that,” but 2006 saw a large increase in the other direction, almost to a point of balance.  If not a balance, the scales of justice are tipping.  Just in case your wondering what albums have tilted the scales, check for Game Theory, The Shining, Food and Liquor(Hero has an interesting take on this album by the way), Hell Hath No Fury, Donuts, Impossible Mission, Chrome Children (the best compilation since Soundbombing 2) and Hi-Teknology 2.   That is quite the impressive list; one that in the last couple years would have been the end of the list for the entire year but that only covers a three month period.   This year was full of high quality albums throughout the year; it was a great feeling to look at the new releases every Tuesday, and at least once a month (sometimes more) see something that sparked your interest.  The last couple years, you were just looking out of habit, all the while knowing there would be nothing that even mattered to you.  And, that’s not even taking into account countless other albums that don’t necessary fall into the pure hop category (Music Dude expounds on this other genre “Bridge”).

The year also closed in a special way with the release of More Fish, Hip-Hop is Dead and Tru3 Magic.  Music made great strides this year and if things continue this way – riding on that momentum – 2007 is poised to be a monster.  Already in the works for next year are anticipated efforts from Common, Ghostface/MF Doom, Talib Kweli and Kanye, too name a few. This could the beginning of a Renaissance.
