Coultrain. The name itself conveys a sense of reverence and excellence as what seems like a tongue-in-cheek homage to arguably the most compelling artist of the 20th century. However, according to the St. Louis crooner, it is “just a childhood nickname”. It is this kind of unassuming, obscure humility veiled in raw talent that make Coultrain one of the most well-considered soul artists to debut since the likes of Eric Roberson and D’Angelo. His debut album, The Adventures of Seymour Liberty is mired in both space-aged production and acoustic arrangements that could garner “album of the year” notoriety when all is said and done.
