Who the hell is Gnarls Barkley? Is it a person? a group? maybe something that you eat with tartar sauce? We went searching for answers and here's what we found: Gnarls Barkley is actually the collective name for Ceelo Green aka Thomas Calloway (solo artist and former member of Goodie Mob) and rising producer Danger Mouse aka Brian Burton.
Both Ceelo and DM are known for their taste for the eclectic, Ceelo as the thought provoking, singing, rapping, and most recognizable member of Atlanta's Goodie Mob. Then later as a experimental, genre bending solo artist that challenged the perception of southern artists. DM as the mad scientist that pieced together The Grey Album, a blending of the vocals from Jay-Z's The Black Album and musical samples from The Beatles The White Album. EMI later obtained a cease and desist order to prevent further sales of the bootlegged album but by then DM had already made his mark, The Grey Album was a cult classic and earned DM a job producing tracks for The Gorillaz Demon Days album.
The two had met in the late 90's but didn't start working together until 2003. Without a label or any real plans for an album the two finished a couple of tracks and passed them around to associates, one of the tracks "Crazy" got leaked to the public and found immediate success with the online download market. The pair finished and released their debut album St. Elsewhere soon after, first in the U.K. then a few weeks later in the U.S.
Continuing to expand their repertoires and venturing into uncharted territory, St. Elsewhere defies conventional genres by delving into dance, pop, hip-hop, techno, rock and soul. At times dark, at times upbeat, at time lively, the album twists and turns, but all the while never failing to entertain, delight and challenge it's listener. Already wildly successful the album has already hit the number one spot in the U.K. and is well on it's way in the U.S. I guess the only question left is exactly where is St. Elsewhere?
