Nice guys finish last but on Eric Roberson's latest album, Mister Nice Guy, not so much. The album is solid, cohesive, and lighter in tone than Roberson's previous efforts. The title track recounts Roberson dismissal as the nice guy while he struggles to understand, in a hip-hop inspired sing-songy flow, why women like the bad guy. Summertime features Chubb Rock that conjures up the nostalgia of past summers. Although the track may seem out of place with the time and date of Mister Nice Guy's release, Roberson's full tenor definitely evokes the lazy and warm days of summer. The lead single, Picture Perfect, features frequent collaborator, Phonté in usual form, blunt and poetic. Its sound is smooth over the kick of the drums as Roberson sings of the perfection of a lover. And what the radio version leaves out is the extended play we'll call "Jealous"; a subtly, sexy ode to the inanimate objects e.g. jeans that get to touch the intimate places of a lover. Talking Reckless tells a cheeky story of running into an ex that is a little cocky more so than sappy. The writing is splendid; Roberson is able to take the common experience of love and relationships and highlight a new and extraordinary aspect. How Would I Feel? showcases Roberson flipping a man's insecurities with soaring adlibs from Jean Baylor (formerly of Zhané). And since Roberson is a grown man, the vulnerability in his songwriting presents experience and imparts wisdom rather than confusion especially on Male Ego featuring Hezekiah. Roberson has really found his niche yet knows how to incorporate pieces of his hip hop, soul, and jazz influences to make his sound more interesting than previously heard. Roberson fans and new listeners alike will not be disappointed with Mister Nice Guy. The album and Roberson are so convincing that we may dispel the notion that good guys finish last... maybe.
