Soul music is not contrived; it comes from inside no matter where you're from and Dominican born, Atlanta-based Heston proves that notion well on his second album Warm Human, Cold World. An Atlanta underground sensation, Heston has a soulfully raspy voice that translates the influence of soul singers Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder into a seamless album on love and lovemaking. The listener will hear those influences instantly, which is both comforting and interesting. "She Lives In Me" is all Marvin Gaye - Heston poetically sings of being entranced by a lover over a seductively minimalist production. Listeners get to experience a little of the West Indies with "Right Here" where Heston's voice rests right at home as it does with the '70s R&B inspired percussion and horns on "My Kinda Lady". Intimate and sensual, Heston sets the mood for making up with "In These Arms" and making love with "For Love". While Warm Human, Cold World is pleasantly sensual, there is little, production-wise, to break up the monotony of the sensuality. The mellow production highlights Heston's songwriting that is expressive and deep. Warm Human, Cold World is sexy, intimate, and - with Heston's effortless delivery and honest songwriting - invitingly believable in an old fashioned way.
