I am a true fan of Ledisi. I purchased two copies of her first album. Her recent appearance on the Black Girls Rock awards show solidified her spot amongst other soul singing sirens before her (Aretha, Chaka). What she hasn't always been blessed with is good musical formulation. A powerful voice has to be accompanied with parallel production in order for the artist to truly shine. This is not the case on Ledisi's third and newest release, Pieces Of Me. Much like its predecessor, the melodies throughout seem to pull the singer down more than elevate her. You wait for the pieces to somehow come together at the end, and they never quite do. However, the potential listener should not be discouraged, and neither am I. Hopefully Ledisi will connect with producers who can harvest and refine her musical ability, and help her achieve the recognition she deserves.
