Average-ish: A few nuggets, but could be better.

Christina Perri has her own big shoes to fill. Her song "Jar of Hearts" was featured on Fox's So You Think You Can Dance and subsequently, performed by those kids at William McKinley High School for the masses. As if you didn't know, that is kind of a big deal, especially for Philadelphia singer/songwriter Perri who wasn't even signed to a major label at the time. "Jar of Hearts" is the perfect dramatic pop ballad and Perri's debut album, Lovestrong, follows with similar fare. Lovestrong is an album inspired about the varied emotions of intimate relationships and Perri sweetly sings of love and heartbreak. While "Jar of Hearts" is definitely a highlight on Lovestrong, tracks such as "Bluebird", a lovely, melodic song about starting over is emotionally strong lyrically and easy listening. The focus of the songs is obviously Perri's songwriting backed by soft acoustic guitar and piano. Perri's voice has been compared to Canadian singer/songwriter Alanis Morrissette but their similarities in tone are lost in Perri's stifled vocality on an album mostly composed of ballads; vocally, Perri stays safe in the pop ballad zone when you can just hear the soul in voice waiting to be released. Perri does channel some of Alanis' angst in "Mine", a trippy, rock-inspired track and the singsongy "Bang Bang Bang" about karma for a scorned lover. "The Lonely", one of the album's promotional singles and ballads, is anthematic and haunting showcasing that Perri can push her voice and songwriting when proving a point. While Lovestrong is not as strong as it could be for her debut, it is beautiful pop fare that starts the journey towards showcasing Perri as more than just a voice as the soundtrack for music and dance television shows.
