Average-ish: A few nuggets, but could be better.

Can you remember the first time you heard "Breakin' My Heart (Pretty Brown Eyes)"? Is that song one of your favorite R&B jams? Twenty years in the game and seven albums later the masterminds behind that sound have returned with 7..., an ecletic R&B album that solidifies Mint Condition as one of the only R&B bands still making great music. With 7..., Mint Condition manages to keep the integrity of a full band and live instrumentation without sounding dated and nostalgic. The band consists of keyboardist Lawrence El, guitarist O'Dell, keyboardist/saxophonist Jef, drummer/vocalist Stokley, and bass player Ricky, an outstanding composition of individuals that has stood the test of musical time-together. And that familiar voice of lead singer Stokley sounds as good as the first time you heard it 20 years ago. 7... combines R&B with bossa nova, funk, and jazz. The lead single "Caught My Eye" is reminiscent of Luther Vandross' "Take You Out", a perfect spring R&B cut to complement Stokley's melodic, smooth, and easy tenor. "Can't Get Away" is the Twin Cities sound of old school R&B and funk with the influence of the signature son Prince. The abilities of Mint Condition are ever present on "Mind Slicker" and "Bossalude". While 7... is a solid album that is consistent with Mint Condition's strengths as a band it is not out of the ordinary. There are some low points in the title song, an easily forgettable hip hop track that breaks of the flow of the album-not necessarily in a good way; and Unsung sounds like a throwaway gospel ballad with an unequal balance of Stokley's and his duet partner's voices. Listeners will be drawn to "I Want It", a funky track with lyrical panting that is a literal translation of wanting something-or someone-so bad it's like needing water or air, as well as "Not My Daddy" featuring the lush vocals of Kelly Price. Essentially, Mint Condition's 7... is a welcome break in today's stagnant R&B scene while being reliably good music.
