Toro y Moi
Underneath the Pine

Average-ish: A few nuggets, but could be better.
3.0
When the media tried to put Toro y Moi in a box last year, they settled on chillwave, a lowfi genre of electronica. With his second release Underneath the Pine, Toro y Mio is stepping out of his un-intentioned box and adding some of the influences of music's well-known genres of pop, disco, and funk to the mix. On most of the tracks Toro y Moi's voice and lyrics take a back seat to the production yet, everything comes together on the new age disco New Beat and the funky Still Sound with Toro y Moi's falsetto creating the melody. The vibe of the album is well...chill, which can make for a lazy listening experience as the creative sounds drown out the anything Toro y Mio may be actually saying. The multi-instrumentalist Toro y Mio definitely progresses within his version of electronica by featuring piano in Divina and acoustic guitar to the soft rock Before I'm Done. The blend of live instrumentation, computer effects, and synthesizers makes Toro y Moi's sound all at once retro and brand new. On Underneath the Pine Toro y Moi demonstrates that if they put you in a box you might as well be the leader of the pack.
