Above average: Not too shabby, commendable effort

I discovered Anthony David while browsing through a local bookstore back in 2006. On the hunt for something new and outside of what was currently on the R&B charts, I came across his first critical release, 3 Chords & The Truth. With a raspy, soulful voice and obvious musical intellect, he was destined to eventually shine under the mentorship of fellow soul musician India Arie. Five years later he has graduated to urban radio rotation and another album release, As Above So Below. The album title (and opening track) doubles as ancient words of wisdom, and each song is steeped in a unique spirituality of some kind. Stand-out singles include: "Forever More" (a profession of everlasting love featuring Algebra and Phonte); "Get Around" (an honest plea from an unfaithful man); "Body Language" (instructions on how to read female cues); and "Backstreet" (three chords and more truth). As Above So Below is quite like its before-mentioned predecessor: not likely to play from beginning to end, but a lot more hit than miss. At any rate, Anthony David has chosen the beaten path of a musician who stays true to his style and craft, and his decision to do so hasn't broken him.
