With any live album, the first thing you want to hear is something new. The opening track, "Let Me In" may be my favorite track on this album. With smooth instrumentals and his raspy voice, David's plea for commitment and attention is evident. "How long you gon keep me knockin' at your door...how long you gon' keep treating me like I'm the one who hurt you before?" There are many instances where we pay for the past hurts and mistakes of a loved one. It is not fair, nor does it assist in the development of a new relationship. The fear of moving forward prevents some of us from being happy because we are so comfortable in misery. Allowing yourself to be open to something different can prove to be best for you, especially if someone wants to share that space with you. This is the message that David is trying to convey in this track, for which is very critical in any situation, present or past.
There are other tracks that have caught my attention on this album, which definitely solidifies his spot in my constant rotation. "Girlfriend", is an upbeat, yet mellow track that discusses the plight of some brothers who try to remain faithful to their significant others, but there are women who try to take them off their axis. "She knows that under normal circumstances, I'm a good boy. She tempts me and you know what gets my attention. You're wicked... don't like you." This line is so true, as it speaks to the fact that not only men are responsible for luring one away from remaining faithful. Another interesting track is the remake of Drake's "Find Your Love". David does a good job of presenting an acoustic version of this very popular song. Other tracks on the album include songs from his previous projects such as, "4evermore", which features the beautiful Algebra Blessett, "Kinfolk/Georgia Peach" and "Cold Turkey". David's new track, "Body Language" is another song that will spark a new kind of appreciation for the singer/songwriter's creative ability. There are many times where the subtle signs of a loved one go unnoticed. David encourages the brothers to pay attention to their women and notice how much she will do things to get his interest. "Haven't you been watching the way that she moves? She's been doing everything in her power to catch your eye..." David has taken a significant step with this album in presenting not only the songs that made you fall in love with him in the first place, but new tracks that mark him as an excellent story teller, singer, artist, and all around brother.
The Setup is an all around solid example of artists who do not get the proper shine they deserve. No one listening to this project will be able to say that this brother doesn't have talent. On the verge of the release of his fourth project, As Above, So Below, in February 2011, David has set himself up for greatness. I have no doubt in my mind that he will continue to prove why he should be far beyond where he is. This short live project is just a tease for what is to come. And while I'm not a fan of teasers, I'm willing to live with this one.
