Soul, hip-hop, blues, funk, jazz, rock there really is no way to categorize the sound of Belleruche; and that's a good thing. The English trio combines every influence of their individual interests to create a more jagged and heavier sound on their third album 270 Stories. Belleruche re-imagines the MC/DJ relationship with vocalist Kathrin deBoer playing the MC alongside DJ Modest. Ricky Fabulous rounds out the trio playing guitar. While the group's two previous efforts (The Express and the more successful, Turntable Soul Music) focused more on the blues and soul elements of their respective influences 270 Stories brings a harder edge that encompasses any and everything. Kathrin's voice is strong and sure in contrast to her lyrics that are cryptic highlighting the uncertainty in human relationships. The tracks beat and break just like a hip-hop joint at the club prominently featuring DJ Modest's ability to re-create the tone of Kathrin's voice against Fabulous' heavy bass riffs. The relationship between the three makes for good listening for everyone: Fuzz Face for rock & soul; Tired Robot for some new school disco; Shudder and Cry for English hip-hop soul; and Ginger Wine for good ol' smooth jazz musings. Each member's talents are most blended on the current single Clockwatchers where Kathrin's harmonies ride Fabulous' guitar melody flawlessly. Although I could go for the smoother sounds of Belleruche's yesteryear, 270 Stories is a perfect transition that proves Belleruche changes things for the better.
