Above average: Not too shabby, commendable effort
3.5
Sure this review could begin with the ubiquitous highlight of Fantasia's personal life of the past two months but on Fantasia's third studio effort in "Back To Me" her personal struggles may just have highlighted that even the biggest obstacles haven't affected the passion of songstress' voice. On "Back To Me", Fantasia does what she does best: just sing. And she does it across the board: from the reggae-infused "Teach Me" and soulful "Bittersweet" to the Broadway ballad "I'm Here" and radio-ready independent woman anthem "Man of the House". While Fantasia fought with her record label for the up-tempo "Move On Me" to be the first single they hit the mark by choosing "Bittersweet" one the album's stand-outs. With this album Fantasia is testing herself lyrically and musically without losing the rawness and gospel influence that made fans love her voice from Idol days. However, the album's title is a little misleading; "Back To Me" is not the most phenomenal R&B album but for Fantasia it explores her artistry more phenomenally than her first two albums. Make sure to listen to "Collard Greens & Cornbread" and "The Thrill Is Gone" (which features Cee-Lo Green) to hear her in a way you never have before.
