Detroit based hip hop group Slum Village returns in full effect with their new album Villa Manifesto. It has been five years since their last album, and during that time they experienced the loss of two of the founding members, J Dilla and Baatin. Their memory doesn’t go in vein with this new album because it delivers the quality music that Slum Village was known for. There are tracks that feature unreleased verses from J Dilla and Baatin, so it gives you the full SV experience. Bare Witness kicks off the album in the right way with genuine lyrical content. Scheming gives us production and lyrics from J Dilla. They ensure feel good music with songs like Faster, which speaks of great relationships. They team with Dwele for my favorite track on the album, Don’t Fight The Feeling, which is very laid back. Another one of my favorites is Reunion pt. 2, which references the history of the group and how they reunited. They close out with We’ll Show You, which is a tribute to J Dilla. The collaborations on this album include Ab, Dwele, Little Brother, Babu, Keys, Posdnous, and Phife. Overall, this is a “must have” album. Whether you are a fan of SV or just an avid music lover you will enjoy this offering. Check it out today.
