Dutch vocalist Joya Mooi (the one with the dark eyes and fantastic fro!) is carving her niche in the music world with Hard Melk, her debut album release. What I like most about Mooi -which means beautiful- is her ability to sing over any style of music. This may also explain the assortment of producers who contributed to her album, making it a variety sampler for the ears. The melodic trip of the eighties is embedded in Lighthouse and Are You Lonesome. Experience the funk of the seventies on Pact With The Sun. You can't deny the bang of crunk-rock on single Get Me and the self-titled track Hard Melk Anthem. Even if a particular song isn't your cup of tea, you become a fan of Mooi's voice, which doesn't strain to meet the demands of the various melodies. I enjoy her the most on album opener My Day (featuring Mar), the snarky tune Doctor, and I Left does me good as well. But hey, I'm partial to bluesy neo-soul. Check Hard Melk out today.
