Vivian Green's debut album A Love Story was a classic in my opinion. There are several songs from that album that I still listen to now. It was ballad heavy and allowed her to showcase her voice without being drowned out by the production on it. If I said that I was as equally impressed with her follow up album Vivian, I would be lying. It was a bit too 'Pop-like' for my taste and there was a marked decline in the amount of ballads. When I heard that she was working on a new project I couldn't help but wonder if it would be more similar to A Love Story or Vivian. After listening to about 50% of it, it became obvious that it would be somewhere in between.
The album opens up with the title track, a piano driven ballad that sets the tone for the rest of the project. From there it alternates between solid R&B tracks such as "Better Man" and "When We're Apart" and epic ballads and Soul tracks like "Somewhere" and "Jordan's Song".
Beautiful attempts to cater to two slightly different audiences, and does a surprisingly good job at doing just that. There is something here for fans of 'mainstream' R&B as well as fans of Soul music. If you're either of those, this album is definitely one that you should own.
