Robert Glasper
Double Booked

by: Talib Nelson on Aug 25 2009
I'll be the first to admit I'm not the biggest fan of modern Jazz. John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, Louis Armsrtong...yes. Most modern jazz musicians....no. In fact the only two I actually really listen to are Wynton Marsalis and Robert Glasper. Glaspers music is extremely rich with textures and nuances that I just can't get from other Jazz musicians. Who else would make a jazz song using J Dilla's "F*@k The Police" as its base?
Double Booked is broken up into two parts. The first 6 tracks are more akin to traditional Jazz, but modern are oving nonetheless. The second half is much more experimental and features appearances from Mos Def & Bilal. It also contains a track that makes use of a vocoder and the aformentioned J Dilla track. All in all it's a great piece to add to any Jazz collection and serves as a wonderful introduction to the genre for newbies.
