A few weeks ago, a huge hullabaloo was made regarding Puff, Diddy, Puffy or whatever it is you like to call him, on Twitter. Mr. Combs was looking to hit a million followers…well just because. Not for charity or any other reason. It was more like an ego thing. He never really spoke to anyone outside of his “bougie pool” of entertainer friends, so why? A fair amount of attention was made about the whole shebang, only to have everyone turn on him in the end once he reached his proposed goal. Some were even quick to pull the race card, saying Ashton Kutcher could do it, but Mr. Combs’ people turned on him when it was his turn (is it that serious?). I respect Mr. Combs’ business savvy, however some of his musical decisions render me dumbfounded. I just don’t respect him enough to follow him and never did. And that goes for a slew of entertainers/artists on Twitter. And I know, I am not the only one.
The beauty of Twitter is that you can choose whom you want to follow. Now don’t get me wrong, I do follow quite a few entertainers/artists, but best believe I follow those who engage in a two-sided conversation. For instance, I will surely not follow Oprah knowing full well that there will not be a viable conversation of sorts between the two of us. It just won’t happen with her millions of followers and she sticks to her “entertainer pool” as do most celebs do. I enjoy a good banter back and forth and I refuse to put anyone up on a pedestal of sorts (except for Maxwell…who I do follow, but he follows no one…you all know how I feel about the man. Moving on…). The mere fact that you have quite a few more zeros in your bank account does not mean zip to me. If you choose to only follow your “entertainer friends” and no one else, then so be it. I will not be one to click on the follow button next to your avatar.
What I’m saying is this: why don’t we stick to the down to earth, fan loving artists who like to banter, share info and hang with us? It is so much more sincere and ego free. And there are so many to choose from! Jody Wately, Chrisette Michele, Yahzarah, Teedra Moses, Cheryl Hickey, Danyel Smith, Jesse Boykins III, Amel Larrieux, PJ Morton, Estelle, Choklate and Chico Debarge are among the few that I banter with and that I follow. And there are many many more. The good thing about it is - there is always choice. You can get with this or you can get with that. The choice is yours.
On that note, the time has come to purge my following list - again.
