Boyz II Men is known as one of the, yes the, most successful groups in music of all time. They have sold over 60 million albums. That is an amazing title and accomplishment in itself. With certified chartbusting hits like "End Of The Road," it’s really no surprise is it? They have released ten albums, each with their own signature of doo-wop harmonies and or covers, to tremendous success. They have even recently announced their plans for their R&B/Hip-Hop Scholarship during a visit to the Institute of Production in Minneapolis. Some say the group has had their time, but I tend to disagree. If you enjoy quality music, artistry and singers who genuinely love what they do – you’ve got it all right here in Boyz II Men. All three artists are singers and there is no denying that. Their admiration and respect for the greats that preceded them, is evident in their shows. Watching their Motown: A Journey Through Hitsville USA album come to life through superb choreography a la Four Tops was appreciable and a pleasure at the same time. Gushing aside, BIIM has gone from selling out stadium and arenas, to playing small quaint venues.
The conclusion of my rant is this: In this day and time where music is wrestling with weeding out the good from the perverse, it is quite a breath of fresh air to know that we still have those who hold their gift dear and like Batman, use their powers for good. Talented musicians surround us everyday and many do not even have a snazzy record deal on a high-powered label. There are a plethora of artists who do sing for the love of singing. They write, for the love of writing and perform for the love of their fans. It’s a basic equation really. The difference is, it is done from the heart and there is nothing better received than a magnificently crafted song. You want to see your baby do well and flourish. Wasn’t it Mom who said, "If you want something done right, you have to do it yourself?" What we must do in return, is show the artists that we speak so fondly of, just how much we admire and appreciate what they do. Purchase those albums, attend the shows, attend listening parties and shout out a good word. Word of mouth travels like wildfire, we know this so let us use it to our advantage. Hoards of artists love what they do and we love them for that. It reflects through their gift to us – their music. So continue to support the brilliant geniuses grooming to be the next Stevie, Donny and Minnie. It is imperative that our kids have something better to listen to than, "…Now Superman that hoe, now watch me doooooo…." I’m not having it.
