Name That Tune

This will be short and sweet this week, so bear with me. Here’s the scenario:

You are funky fresh dressed, ready to party. Heading out to check a new artist. An artist that you heard nothing but exceptional things about and everyone cannot stop raving about them. You figure, why not? So you head out to the venue, take your seat and wait patiently for the artist to make their debut. Equipment is all in place, as you watch the band take the stage. And then the artist steps forth, ready to give the performance of their life.

The first track is amazing and has your body bumping to the bass line. The second track is a slow jam that you would love to add to your quiet storm CD (I would say tape, but you know…). The artist has a little repartee with the crowd and is on to track number three. And then it dawns on you. Wait a minute, what were the names of tracks one through three?

Now this has happened to me many a time , where I am enjoying a new artists’ set, but have absolutely no inkling of what the title of a song is. Or better yet, they go through the whole set with tracks you may be familiar with, but that one track you don’t know, they refuse to divulge the title! When I mentioned this problem at a lunch one day, everyone present relayed the same thing – OMG you know? Why is that? Why is it that an artist assumes since you are at the show, you would or should know their music? I am sure it is not done purposely, because obviously, every artist is concerned about a fans’ experience at their show. We the fan, also understand that once you are engrossed in your show, it is quite easy to forget the little things. Nonetheless, not knowing the title of a song is not a micro-problem, but a mega-problem. I mean, we come up with the most creative lyrics and titles! Anita Baker’s "Just Because" can become, "I Love To Talk To People" and Prince’s "Controversy" can become "Count Your Blessings." Trust me, it has happened already.

So we beg of you, we the fans are pleading to the amazing songsters and songstresses that we follow; please remember that not all of us are title savvy and judging from the above made up titles, you do not want to leave your pride and joy in our hands. We do enough damage on the daily with your song lyrics. A lovely reminder of the track title during your intro would be appreciable…yes for every track please, it can save us from walking away from the show with a heavy question mark, dumbfounded and going around in circles like a puppy chasing its tail.

What say you? Share your thoughts!
