Above average: Not too shabby, commendable effort
3.5
Zap Mama’s 6th album, Supermoon, takes listeners on a musical journey across the globe with African, European, and Latin inspired tunes. The album is more than a simple playlist of individual representations of the aforementioned cultures; each song is a musical fusion of instruments and vocals that illustrates the African and European heritage of the group. A perfect example of this is “Princess Keshia” which has elements of African chants and European vocals reminding the listener of orthodox Catholicism.

While the group leverages its multicultural background to influence the music, the group’s vocal and instrumental creativity and mastery are what stand out. Belgian born lead singer Marie Daulne displays her range of vocal creativity from pygmy inspired “Hey Brotha” and “Kwenda” to European inspired “Supermoon”. “Affection” also has a unique soulful sound showing traces of western influences as well. This production transcends typical categories or labels for music. It is a genre of its own. Zap Mama has made its mark in the music industry by creating an album with artistic value that cannot be imitated. The album is purposeful, eccentric, unguarded and, most of all, unique.
