India Arie
Testimony Vol. 1

by: Talib Nelson on Jul 01 2006
Above average: Not too shabby, commendable effort
3.5
An older, and even more mature India Arie appears on her third album as she deals with issues most R&B artists would run from. The album opens with a prayer, asking god for the serenity to accept the things she cannot change, courage to change the things that she can, the wisdom to understand the difference, and the courage to love with an open heart. The intro sets the tone for the entire album as although the subject matter might vary, her spirituality is always evident. She talks about racial injustice on "India's Song", and reminds us of the importance of forgiveness on "Wings Of Forgiveness" citing examples left by Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Ghandi and Jesus Christ. Testimony also features some interesting guest artists like the folk group Rascal Flats who lend banjos and background vocals on the beautifully simple "Summer", and Akon who appears on the "I Am Not My Hair" (Remix) Testimony Vol. 1, Life & Relationship overall is India's declaration of consistency and should cement her place amongst some of music's best; past and present.
