Amel Larrieux
Morning

by: Talib Nelson on Jul 01 2006
Average-ish: A few nuggets, but could be better.
3.0
The former lead singer of Groove Theory returns with her third solo effort Morning a refreshing blend of soul, jazz, folk, and blues. Still unknown to many Amel is truly one of the better vocalists out there but just never manages to get the exposure she rightfully deserves. On Morning she once again shows an extraordinary range, sounding extremely comfortable in all of the genres the album traverses. Often lost in the beauty of her voice is the depth of the subject matters and lyrics she often touches upon, The trend continues on this album as songs like "Weary" and "Mountain Of When" are a lot deeper than they appear to be if the listener pays close attention to the words. "Gills And Tails" is another metaphoric, multilayered song filled with imagery. "No One Else " is a ballad reminiscent of "Make Me Whole" from her debut album in which she shines so brightly that the piano in the background seems to fade away and her voice takes center stage. Very strong effort that definitely takes the road less traveled.
