The true definition of independent artists? when you can write, produce, and distribute your own material on your own terms, and that's exactly what Epitome has been able to do. "Maza the messenger" and "Ced the archbishop" both pride themselves in actively taking control of their music, their lives and their communities. Going beyond just talking abut it on record the pair have given their time and energy to several community programs throughout their native New Jersey. This independent, socially aware spirit makes it's way into their aptly titled "Something's Terribly Wrong Vol. 1" in which the duo manages to take gritty production and rhyme delivery tailor made for the streets and infuse them with social, politically and spiritual lyrics. The results? a very solid effort. Although the production and the mixing are rough in some spots when compared to standard industry recordings, the lyrical content remains at a high level through out. The project opens with "Protect Home" which is basically an introduction to the group and what they're about. Next comes epitome's biggest hit to date the infectious "Pressure" with another indie artist, Mariel working the hook. Other standout tracks include: "Score" where we see the duo showcasing their delivery and beat riding ability, "Big Hustle" in which the production and the lyrics are equally bright, "All I Got" a personal look into the personal lives of the mc's and "Just Don't Care" probably my favorite track on the album, with great production, delivery, lyrics and even a segment where the beat drops out and Maza murders his verse. If you are a fan of
underground hip-hop or just looking for a nice change of pace
"Something's Terribly Wrong" is a definitely worth adding to
your collection.
